Description
Vintage Typus Orbis Terrarum planisphere by Ortelius.
Discover one of the most iconic vintage planispheres of the Renaissance: Abraham Ortelius's Typus Orbis Terrarum, the first model of which was published in 1570 in the very first modern atlas, Theatrum Orbis Terrarum.
This historical masterpiece, reprinted until 1612, includes unique handwritten annotations referring to the sea by Vasco Balboa, Gerard Mercator, as well as the Ganges according to Ptolemy.
Directly inspired by the maps of Mercator, Gastaldi and Gutierrez , this map illustrates the major geographical hypotheses of the time: Terra Australis Nondum Cognita, Northwest Passage, approximate representation of Japan, New Guinea and a North America still largely mythologized.
An ideal piece for enthusiasts of old maps and the history of geography.
